FAQs

Speed, safety & security questions

Why some websites are slow or unsafe, and how a static website keeps yours fast and secure without an expert.

Why is my business website loading so slow on mobile?

Websites usually load slowly because of heavy database software, oversized images or too many plugins. Traditional platforms build each page every time someone visits, whereas a static website has every page ready in advance, so it opens quickly on phones.

What is a static website and why is it safer?

A static website is a set of ready-made pages that load straight away for your visitors. It is safer because there is no database and no admin login on the website, which removes the most common ways hackers break into small business sites.

How do I secure my website from hackers without hiring an expert?

The simplest way to secure your website without an expert is to use a static website with no database. With no database, plugins or login page, most common attacks have nothing to target. Hosting on Cloudflare adds protection against attacks and traffic floods.

Do static websites have databases that can get hacked?

No, static websites don't use databases. That means database attacks such as SQL injection, which regularly affect traditional business websites, simply don't apply.

How do I make my website load instantly on phones?

To load quickly on phones, a website needs lightweight pages, small optimised images and fast hosting close to your visitors. Our static websites are delivered from Cloudflare's global network with no server-side page building, so pages appear on customers' phones almost instantly.

Can a static website get infected with malware or viruses?

It is very unlikely, because a static website has no database, no plugins and no file-upload area for attackers to use. These are the usual ways malware gets into websites, so removing them closes the most common entry points.

How do I back up my website if something goes wrong?

Our static websites are backed up automatically: every version is stored in a code repository. If a change goes wrong, the website can be rolled back to the previous working version quickly.

What happens if thousands of people visit my website at the same time?

A static website copes easily with sudden busy periods. Database-driven websites can slow down or crash when lots of visitors arrive at once, but static pages are served from Cloudflare's global network, which is built to handle very large amounts of traffic.

Why do some websites say “Not Secure” in the browser bar?

Browsers show “Not Secure” when a website doesn't use HTTPS, which needs an SSL certificate. The warning puts visitors off and can hurt your search rankings. Every website we build uses HTTPS automatically, so it will never show this warning.

What is an SSL certificate and do I have to pay for it?

An SSL certificate encrypts the connection between your website and its visitors and shows the padlock next to your web address. Some hosting companies charge extra for one, but on our hosting it is set up and renewed automatically at no extra cost.
