How to write website content that wins customers

The words on your website do more selling than the design. Visitors decide in a few seconds whether you can help them, so your job is to answer their questions quickly and make the next step obvious. You don't need to be a writer; you just need to write the way you'd talk to a customer.

Start with a clear headline

Your home page headline should say what you do and where. "Family-run guest house 2 minutes from the North Pier" beats "Welcome to our website" every time. If a stranger can't tell what you sell from the first line, rewrite it.

Answer the questions customers really ask

Write down the questions people ask you on the phone or at the counter, then answer them on your pages:

  • What exactly do you offer, and what's included?
  • How much does it cost, or at least where do prices start?
  • Which areas do you cover, and when are you open?
  • How quickly can you do it?
  • Why should I choose you over someone else?

Answering these honestly does two jobs: it builds trust with visitors, and it gives Google the words people actually search for, which is the heart of simple SEO.

Give each service its own section or page

One page that lists everything you do in a single paragraph rarely ranks for anything. A short section or page per main service, written about that service, gives each one a fair chance in search and makes it easier for visitors to find what they came for.

Show proof, not adjectives

"High quality" and "great service" are claims everyone makes. Real photos of your work, genuine reviews with the customer's permission, years in business, qualifications and memberships are proof. Never invent reviews or testimonials; it breaks consumer law and Google's rules, and customers can usually tell.

Make the next step obvious

Finish every page with one clear action: book, call, email or get a quote. Keep the button wording specific ("Check availability") and put your contact details where people expect them.

Keep it readable

Use short paragraphs, plain words and headings that describe what follows. Read it out loud: if you stumble, so will your visitors. Then see our guide to planning your page layout, or ask us to help shape your wording as part of your new site.
